COPPER RED

I am fascinated with Copper Red Glazes. The excitement of brilliant colors upon opening a kiln is such a joy for me. Copper Red was discovered by the Chinese in the 12th century. The glaze was very difficult to use and still is. Copper Reds work properly only with precise ingredient measurements, thickness, firing temperatures, and kiln atmosphere conditions. The brilliant reds are the result of starving the kiln of oxygen during the firing at specific temperatures. This glaze became one of the most requested by Chinese royalty and merchants
